President Shapton called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday September 23, 1987 in the Finnish Room of the Memorial Union.

Roll: Twenty members/alternates were present. Absent were: Charles Joyner, Jorma Kalliokoski, Bruce Pletka, Patrick Martin, Randy Owsley, and E.H. Timothy Whitten.

Visitors: Linda Belote, Burt Whitten, and Bob Butler.

Minutes of Meeting No. 156 - Approved

President's Report (Appendix A - Available by Request from the Senate Office).

President Shapton also included an Annual Report (Appendix B - Available by Request from the Senate Office) that includes a listing of committee members from last year.

Vice President's Report (Appendices C and D - Available by Request from the Senate Office).

Committee Reports

A. Curricular Policy - No report.

B. Instructional Policy - No report.

C. Institutional Evaluation - No report.

D. Budget - No report.

E. Faculty Fringe Benefits - No report.

F. Elections

Pete Tampas conducted elections for this year's Senate officers. Elected officers are: William Shapton, President; Phyllis Boutilier, Vice President; and David Sprague - Secretary.

G. Faculty Handbook - No report.

H. Planning - No report

President Shapton recommended that this committee present a brief summary of last year's Planning Report.

I. General Education - No report.

J. Computer Fee Policy - No report.

K. Quality of University Life Task Force

President Shapton will appoint a chairperson for this committee and will request Senate approval. The President expressed his desire to see significant action by this committee.

 

Old Business

Bill Predebon expressed the opinion that there may be some confusion among the faculty on the new plus grading system. Is further clarification needed so the faculty understands the intent of the plus grading system? Dean Belote commented that this issue is resulting in notable concern by students. President Shapton directed the instructional policy committee to take action on this matter.

New Business

A. Proposal 1-88, Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Physics

Proposal 1-88 was not presented to the faculty ten days prior to this meeting. The Senate considered this an an emergency proposal so that, if approved, it would be available for Board of Control consideration at their next meeting. William Sewell spoke in support of Proposal 1-88.

Upon consideration, Proposal 1-88 was unanimously approved by the Faculty Senate.

 

A motion was called to adjourn the meeting. Motion approved.
